LETTER FROM DIRECTOR OF COMPETITIVE

Hello ESC Community,

First and foremost, we would like to thank you for your continued patience through these trying times.

Our Club has been working hard to monitor information from Local, County, and State authorities to learn when we will be given the go ahead for the next phase in Return-To-Play for our players.

We have attended numerous meetings to gather all information on Return-To-Play protocols. Unfortunately, we are at a standstill, as authorities have made no changes yet. The current projected start date for the season is October 31st. We remain optimistic about the next Presidio meeting in regards to Return-To-Play.

While we remain in our current phase, our Rec and Competitive coaches are continuing to work with our players to keep them active and excited about our wonderful sport.

We ask for your continued support and understanding about the current situation. We will keep you informed as soon as we get any new information.

The Escondido Soccer Club Board hopes that everyone is safe and healthy as we continue to navigate our current circumstances. Safety for players and staff is of the utmost importance.

Sincerely,
Rob Parker
Director of Competitive
Escondido Soccer Club – FC Heat

Hola comunidad ESC,

Sinceramente,
Rob Parker
Director of Competitive
Escondido Soccer Club – FC Heat

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH STEVE YORKE

You recently had a major surgery and are now back on the fields and in action. Can you tell us a little bit about that? How does it feel being back on the pitch?

Yes, I had open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve. My teenager twins discovered my heart murmur while they were teaching me how to use a stethoscope in order to check on my aging father during COVID. My daughter noticed the difference in the sound of my heart, and my son who is a licensed EMT, pinpointed it to my mitral valve. After tests, doctors told me that if I didn’t have surgery my lifespan would be approximately two years. The surgery was very risky and challenging, and my rehabilitation has been rapid under the guidance of professionals. I am very thankful for my wonderful children for giving me a new lease on life. I now feel much better than I was before the surgery and I now have a 40 year lifespan – God willing.

To be isolated for so long was very challenging and lonely as I like to be around people. I missed walking the fields and watching our players in action. I also missed the camaraderie with coaches and parents who always took the time to talk with me. I am back now and loving it, even though we are going through some very tough times.

Did you play soccer growing up? If so, what position did you play? Which position is your favorite?

I started playing soccer around 7 years-old and played for all of my schools and college. Upon leaving I played for an English League Club called Port Vale from the midlands of England. I ended up leaving them and joining the British Royal Navy who I played soccer for all around the world.

I played in midfield and spent quite a bit of time playing full-back. I was a worker, a runner who was more effective in midfield. My favorite position was number 8 or 10.

Who is your favorite MLS team? Who is your all-time favorite player?

I would have to say I have a fondness for Houston Dynamo simply because I spent a few days with their coaching staff and players a couple of years ago. The head coach at the time was Owen Coyle who mad me feel very at home. I watched them prepare for their home game against LA Galaxy, which was Stevie Gerrard’s (ex-Liverpool) debut.

My all-time favorite player is George Best. George Best was an Irish international who was the 1960’s and 1970’s equivalent to Lionel Messi. Watch some videos of George in action, he was absolutely breathtaking, playing with a heavier ball in those days and on muddy fields while avoiding very aggressive tackles.

Please tell us two truths and 1 lie about yourself and we will guess which ones are the truth and which one is a lie.

1. When I was in high-school my girlfriend and I won a county prize for doing the foxtrot in a ballroom dancing competition.

2. I once successfully completed a real-life emergency landing while piloting a single engine airplane with my mother as the only passenger.

3. When my kids were 6 years-old, I sat on a very alive four-foot rattlesnake for ten minutes.

ANSWERS…

1. FALSE – I have never competed in ballroom dancing, but it is in my plans for retirement.

2. TRUE – For Mother’s Day in 1994, as a licensed pilot, I flew my mom over the ocean and the
flower fields in Carlsbad and experienced  mechanical problems at 3000 feet. After
communicating with the tower at Palomar Airport, they closed the airport to all air traffic and
allowed me to land the wrong way on the runway.

3. TRUE – I was inside an L-shaped brick barbecue thinking I had an electrical problem while
sitting on a dustpan, which was covered with a dirty towel. I spent 10 minutes trying to figure
out why the electrical system was buzzing but still working, only to find out I was sitting on a
rattlesnake under the towel. It came after me when I got up but I managed to get away.

No wonder I experienced heart failure!
